Bertil Walfred Broddy, age 88, of Cambridge and formerly of Isanti, passed away February 6, 2009 at GracePointe Crossing-Gables East in Cambridge. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, February 11th at South Isanti Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Venneman officiating. A visitation will be held from 4-8 P.M. on Tuesday, February 10th at Strike Funeral Home – Isanti Chapel and also 1 hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Interment will be in Isanti Union Cemetery.
Bertil Walfred Broddy was born January 18, 1921 in Hassela, Sweden. Bertil was 4 years old when he and his mother came to America. He grew up and went to school in Athens Township in rural Isanti. He was confirmed at the Lutheran Church of Isanti. Bertil served in World War II in the Pacific theatre flying supplies to the front lines. On April 9, 1944 he married Dolores Gallmeier at the Dalbo Baptist Church. From this union four daughters and one son were born. They made their home on the family farm in Isanti Township, where they lived for 60 years. After the war, Bertil farmed and also worked at the Arsenal in New Brighton, Jack Lange Construction and Bell Pole and Lumber. Bertil loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Bertil taught his Grandson’s to hunt and to be respectful of nature. Bertil was a lifelong member of Isanti VFW Post 2735, he served in various capacities including Poppy Chairman and pulling the Auxiliary float in the Isanti Rodeo Parade.
Bertil passed away on February 6, 2009 at GracePointe Crossing Gables East in Cambridge at the age of 88 years and 19 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice Broddy and Peter Hasselblad and an infant son, Mark.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dolores; four daughters, Janet (Paul) Bostrom, Kathryn (Dennis) Lodin, Bonnie (Steven) Mettling and Deanna Mettling; eight grandchildren, Julie Rosenberg, Jill Stavos, Jeff Lodin, Jennifer Lodin, Chris Castagneri, Dan Mettling, Heather Bultema and Nathan Mettling; 10 great-grandchildren; cousins and other relatives in Sweden.
