Alice Beckman, age 93, of Minneapolis, died January 10, 2010 at Cambridge Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 18th at Dassel Evangelical Covenant Church. A time for visiting will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment Dassel Cemetery.
Alice (Johnson) Beckman was born August 1, 1916 to Erick and Mary Johnson in Cokato, MN. She grew up on the family farm, the youngest of 13 children. She went to Birch Lake School as a young girl, and was confirmed at a Mission Church north of Cokato.
On January 31, 1935 she was married to Conrad N. Beckman. They spent the first few years of their marriage south of Dassel where Conrad did farm work and also worked for the WPA. In the early 40’s they moved to Minneapolis when Conrad got a job with D. W. Onan. While living in NE Minneapolis, Alice was a stay at home mom and homemaker. In 1952 they moved to north Minneapolis. Alice continued to live there after Conrad’s death in 1985 until she moved to Cambridge Assisted Living apartments in November of 2009. She was there until her death on January 10, 2010.
In her younger years, Alice enjoyed working outside in the spring and summer with her flowers, and in the winter made many latch hook rugs. She also loved playing Rumicube…especially when her grandchildren challenged her. And even into her 90’s, grandma Alice enjoyed baking cookies. Whenever her children or grandchildren came she always had some to send home with them. One other thing she enjoyed doing was putting puzzles together, and there often was one in progress for anyone to work on when they stopped by. She never learned to drive a car, but took advantage of Metro Mobility to get groceries and do other shopping. It was during these trips that she met many lady friends.
Her parents, her husband, Conrad, and sisters, Beda, Ruth, Signe, Myrtle, Christina and Mathilda, and brothers Verner, Art, Edwin, Karl, Nels, and Ole preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children Adeline (Marvin) Anderson, Dassel, Vernon (Elaine), Cambridge and Jerry, Frederic WI. Five grandchildren; Trudy (Scott) Suter, Todd Anderson, Debbie (Jeff) Edblad, Amy (Russ) Vavra and Jeni (Lee) Knowlton. Nineteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Also, special niece, Velma Jorgensen and several other nieces and nephews.
