Phyllis Jean Roddy, age 87, of Bloomington passed away February 8, 2010 at GracePointe Crossing Gables West in Cambridge. Phyllis’ quiet strength and unassuming ways will continue to be a model to her family as we celebrate her life with a memorial service on Tuesday, February 16th at 12:00 P.M. at Oak Grove Presbyterian Church, 2200 West Old Shakopee Road, Bloomington. Memorials suggested to Oak Grove Presbyterian Church.
Phyllis Jean Johnson Roddy was born on November 11, 1922 to Thomas and Hazel Johnson in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She had one brother, Donald, and one sister, Mary. Following graduation from Robbinsdale High School in 1941, Phyllis worked in the downtown offices of Woolworths. Phyllis married her high school sweetheart, Jack Roddy, on March 12, 1945 at the home of her parents. This union was blessed with three children, Roxanne, David and Jay.
Phyllis’ life was dedicated to her family and friends. She was a very caring mother whose reputation for “cleanliness” will stay with us always. She enjoyed antiquing, sewing, decorating and entertaining.
She was one of the original kitchen workers in the Sturdy Oaks program at Oak Grove Church and she and Jack also volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program for many years. After Jack’s retirement, they enjoyed traveling together and spending time with friends. Over the years, many friends shared a cup of coffee or a meal on the porch where Phyllis, the consummate hostess, made everyone feel welcome.
Phyllis was preceded in death by parents Thomas and Hazel Johnson and brother and sister-in-law Donald and Marion Johnson, and special aunt, Bernice Johnson.
She is survived by her husband, Jack; daughter, Roxanne (Ken) Dean of Cambridge, MN, son, David (Pat) Roddy of Cambridge, MN; son, Jay (Lisa) Roddy of St.Bonifacius, MN; sister, Mary Ewer of Benson, MN; Grandchildren: Greta (John) Schimming, Karla (Dan) Mettling, Paul (Katie) Dean, Anne Hof, Kimberly (Brian) Goodmanson, Kyle
