Margarete H. Dehn, age 94, died August 21, 2011 at Cambridge Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, SEPTEMBER 3rd, at Strike Funeral Home – Cambridge Chapel with Rev. Howard Skulstad officiating. A time for visiting will be held one hour prior to the service.
Marge is the oldest of four children of John and Hattie Hanson. When Marge was just nine years old, her mother died from tuberculosis. Over the next several years, the four children were separated and sent to a succession of relatives throughout North and South Dakota and Minnesota.
Marge married at age 18 and soon had four children of her own. Her husband fought in WWII leaving her to bring up the children alone. When he returned from the war, he could not cope with theresponsibilities of fatherhood and they soon separated. She was again left to raise the children single-handedly.
She worked at Montgomery Wards in St. Paul for more than 35 years. She continued to work part-time after retirement for many years. She was also an active volunteer until she was 85. After she retired she finally had time to travel and she visited nearly all of the United States including Alaska and Hawaii and all but one of the Canadian provinces. She enjoyed many trips by air, sea and land with friends.
When she wasn’t traveling or keeping up her home in St. Paul, she enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble and other games with friends at the Senior Center in Roseville. Marge was an avid reader, asubscriber to the St. Paul Pioneer Press and several magazines and book clubs. She loved crossword puzzles and was very good at it. She was interested in world and local events and very knowledgeable on many subjects.
She had two sons and two daughters. Her youngest daughter was killed by an automobile when she was only five. Marge’s children have been very close to her and each other and enjoyed her company for every vacation, holiday and important event in their lives. She has eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, most of whom live nearby. Marge loved animals and had always lived with at least one cat. Most recently she had two cats, Tootsie and Tiger they were her kids.
