David Matthew Johnson, 66, passed away on April 20, 2025, at his beloved Three Rail Ranch in Isanti, Minnesota—a place he poured his heart into and called home. He passed away from a compilation of several recent health issues, surrounded by the love and comfort of his cherished home. A celebration of David’s life will be held at a later date at the Three Rail Ranch.
Born on February 20, 1959, David grew up in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, as one of nine children in the lively and loving household of Burt and Charmaine Johnson. From an early age, David stood out for his humor, creativity, and knack for making others feel welcome.
At just 18 years old, he purchased what would become the Three Rail Ranch in a bold and heartfelt attempt to win the heart of his high school sweetheart, Carol—who had always dreamed of having a horse of her own. That young act of love turned into a lifetime of shared dreams, hard work, and cherished memories with the family they built together.
A natural host and people-person, David built and owned his own bar, Maverick’s Saloon, in the “Badlands of East Beroun”, where he worked for over 15 years until 2020. He took great pride in creating a welcoming atmosphere—where friends could gather, stories could be shared, and laughter came easy. During his time there, he formed countless friendships and left a lasting impression on everyone who walked through the door.
He was a true entertainer at heart, always ready with a song, a story, or a witty comment to bring smiles and laughter to those around him. Whether it was singing karaoke, cracking a perfectly timed joke, or simply attending a family gathering, David had a way of lighting up every room he entered.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Carol, and their four children: Ryan (Christina), Erin (Erik), Bethany (Cody), and Katie (Michael). David was a proud and loving grandfather to Julia, Odin, Emma, August, and Eleanor, each of whom brought him immense joy and laughter. He is also remembered with love by his siblings and extended family.
Dear Carol and family,
We are so very sorry for your loss. Dave was a true friend and so much fun to hang out with. Our family enjoyed his humor, entertainment , and friendship. We were lucky enough to bowl with him, golf with him, garage sale with him and karaoke with him! He is proudly ringing the bell in Heaven’s Ranch.
Many Great Memories …11 of us in that house on Drew Ave. ..”We didn’t have it all together, but Together we had it all”
You will be greatly missed, brother.

My deepest sympathy, Dave was so full of life and love when we would see him (most at the county fair) my sincere condolences.
My heart breaks for the entire Johnson family. This is a lovely tribute to David.
Growing up we always thought it was a treat to spend a little time around my friend Jimmy’s older brother, and that never went away.
It’s easy to see how we and everyone was drawn to such a bright and affable person.
My deepest condolences. Fly on Maverick.
Bone boy was always quick with a joke and quick to help you if needed. Him & I could be found hangin around with Kelly Tempesta, Dick Cassidy, Doug DeMorett, the other Dave Johnson(Melvin) Jim Snell, Mark Thompson and a host of others. We once changed the name of a movie on the marquee @ the Terrace theatre to read “DAVE & PAM R FAT CATS. U know who we meant. Hugs & prayers to Carol & the whole family. We lost a good one. ❤️🙏
Dave will always hold a special place in my heart. You Johnson’s are some of the most important people in my life. I know there was a reason he was placed in my life. I loved him so much and all of you dearly
You will be missed uncle. When my dad Bob called and shared the news I was in shock. I had just seen you twice in the last week at Timmys party and my grandpas funeral. I gave you a hug and said I love you. I’m glad I did. Never forget your spirit and energy and sharing the spotlight with your brothers at the big family get togethers.

Godspeed my friend, I always called you Disco! bless you and the Johnson family! Onan . you will be missed!
So sorry to hear about your loss. The Johnson family was always so involved with the horse 4-H program. I remember David’s smiling face helping family and friends, getting kids ready to show and participate at the county fair. Your family is in our prayers.
Dear Carol and Family,
Brad and I are deeply sorry for the loss of Dave. Love the smile and friendship he always gave us when we saw and visited Maverick’s saloon! Always had a great story as well! Thoughts and prayers as you all journey through this difficult time🙏❤️
My heart breaks for Carol and the family. I am so very sorry for your loss. He is in heaven giving smack to my dad and all the other friends gone before him. Hugs and prayers! ❤️ The Ekvall family
Always a memorable time whenever you were in his presence !Playing softball with him was always good for a laugh! Later years we’d ride motorcycle to his saloon for a cold one Gonna mis his friendly spirt!
Maverick, you welcomed us and his dog with open arms. It was fun to see such a variety of folks coming and going. My favorite memories were getting to know the donkey that was painted green for the parade, buying the hand made rocker as a surprise and mist of all watching the lady ride her horse right thru the front door to get a drink 🐴. RIP
David the holidays and parties without you will never be the same but knowing that your spirit will live on is a comfort in our grief. Enjoy your journey. Love you cousin.
