Donald Akerson, age 80,of Stanchfield died July 18, 2010 at his home. A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 24th at Christ the King Catholic Church in Cambridge with Father James David Hahn as Celebrant. A time for visiting will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Don was born at St. Louis Park, Minnesota on April 18, 1930 and moved to Hopkins in 1936. He graduated from Hopkins High School, Class of 1948. Don left in 1948 to serve his country for 22 years in the U.S. Army. During his career he served in the Korean War with the 2nd Infantry Division as a rifleman earning the CIB and 5 campaign stars, including the Chinese intervention. Don married Jeanne M. Young in Chicago in 1954 and they had 8 children. Don was employed by Control Data in Quality Control Engineering, taking early retirement at the age of 55 in Bloomington. In 1992 Don married Carol Mae Splittstoser. They resided at Rush Lake and Edinburg, Texas. Don was a member of the American Legion (40 & 8), VFW (Cootie) and the Isanti County Sportsman Club.
CW3 Donald Akerson retired United States Army died July 18, 2010 at his home at the age of 80 years and 3 months. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Marjorie (Thom); by wife, Jeanne Marie (Young); daughter, Jeannice Lynn and son-in-law, Jim Kovaks.
Don is survived by his wife, Carol Mae; children, Diane (Mike) Slovik, Mike (Betsy) Akerson, Jamie (Jay) Anderson, Donna Dutcher, Kathy (Tom) Elbert, Mary Akerson and Sharon Akerson; step-children, Jennifer (Mike) Johnson, Virginia (Mitch) Vidor, JeanAnn (Pat) Mattson, Joni (Jeff) Nelson, Julie (Ron) Johnson and Robert Splittstoser; by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and father-in-law, LaVerne Kelling.
