Philip “Chuck” Kardell, age 78 of Cambridge died March 30, 2011 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, April 2nd at Cambridge United Methodist Church with Pastor Dan Schneider-Bryan officiating. A time for visiting will be held 1/2 hour prior to the service at the church.
Philip Axel Kardell was born March 20, 1933 in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota to Axel and Marjorie (Kaye) Kardell. Chuck graduated from Sauk Rapids High School in 1952. He then served his country in the Army during the Korea Conflict. On August 16, 1955 Chuck was united in marriage to Joyce McCormick in Fort Hood, Texas. They were blessed with two daughters, Nancy and Karen. They lived in Northeast Minneapolis, Blaine, Ham Lake and New Brighton, moving to Cambridge upon retirement from the Mounds View School District where they both worked. Chuck worked in maintenance there for 28 years, retiring in 1995. After retirement he volunteered for several organizations including Habitat for Humanity, the Methodist NOMAD Mission, the Salvation Army, Methodist Church and the Shalom Shop. Chuck was also a lifetime member of the VFW and was a member of the Blue Lakers Camping Club. He loved traveling, woodworking and fixing things. He also loved their cat Jenny, flowers, birds, babies and a good joke. Philip and Joyce have made their home in Cambridge for the past 16 years.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Joyce, of Cambridge; two daughters, Nancy Johnson (Ken Atkinson) of Elk River, Karen (David) Bednarczyk of Blaine; three brothers, John (Delores) Kardell of Sauk Centre, Lynn Kardell of Foley, Gary (Joan) Kardell of Linwood; two sisters, Gail East of Park Rapids, Carol (John) Wright of St. Paul; three grandchildren, Danielle (Ian) Opay, Anthony Ebner (Emily Franks), Marissa (Russell) Clark; four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Lily, Ava and Scarlett Opay; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by three brothers, George, Clifford and Guy.
