Cheryl L. Slater, age 57, of Isanti died October 20, 2012 at home. A service celebrating her life here and her passage into eternal life with her Maker will be held on Monday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. at New Life Church in Princeton. Pastor Chuck Pruett will be officiating. A visitation will be held the day before at Strike Funeral Home – Cambridge Chapel on Sunday, Oct 28 from 3 p.m.-7 p.m.
She was born on March 1, 1955 to John Gustave and Donna Jean (Pickering) Blumer at her grandmother’s home in Minneapolis. She was raised in Isanti and graduated from St. Francis High School.
On July 25, 1973 she married Bradley Slater. Their daughter, Amy, was born on June 29, 1978.
Cheryl spent many years as a homemaker, taking care of her family and raising her daughter, as well as caring for many foster children. She worked retail at the Pamida store in Cambridge until they closed. While her daughter was a student at Chadashchay Christian School, Cheryl volunteered many hours as a classroom aid and as an assistant in the office. She served as a missionary in Mexico and in a Hispanic church in Utah alongside her husband, Brad. Children everywhere from Mexico, Utah and Minnesota gravitated toward her, and she had several “grandchildren” across the country. Everywhere she went she had a positive impact on people, even including her last days in the hospital, where many commented on how she was still smiling. She will be well remembered for the strong supportive role she played in mission work, for her peacemaking personality, and for her unwavering faith.
Cheryl received a diagnosis of Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a rare form of skin cancer, in November 2011. Over the next 11 months, she fought a heroic battle with grace and strength. Cheryl (Blumer) Slater was received into the arms of Jesus on Oct. 20, 2012.
She is survived by her husband, Bradley; daughter, Amy (Gabriel) Pass of Minneapolis; granddaughters Francisca (Ulises) and Aurora; sisters Linda (Sonny) Johnson of Oak Grove and Deborah (Bud) Anderson of Mora; brother, John (Polly) Blumer of Isanti; and many other loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Donna Jean Blumer; father, John Gustave Blumer; sister, JoAnne Blumer; and brother, Jeffrey Blumer.
