Grace Joyce Mattson was born June 21, 1968 in Cambridge to Gordon and Diane (Hendricks) LaRowe. Gracie was raised in the Isanti/Cambridge Community and graduated from Cambridge-Isanti High School, Class of 1987. She grew up and was baptized at Elim Baptist Church in Isanti. On October 8, 1988 she married Dean Mattson and they made their home in rural Isanti. Grace worked at Rum River Therapy for several years and for the past 13 years in the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office. She took pride in her job at the County Jail. Gracie had many interests. She loved traveling and always looked forward to vacations. She took joy in her house, filling it with plants, pretty dishes and nice things. She gardened and worked very hard to build her house for herself and her son. Gracie was always helping others and never turned her back on anyone, including complete strangers. She loved bird and deer hunting and just hanging out with the hunters. She was also a “thrill seeker” riding her motorcycle and boating with family and friends. She loved nature, the woods and watching the wildlife around her house. Her son James and her pets were the world to her.
Grace died on January 26, 2014 at the Maui Memorial Medical Center in Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her father, Gordy LaRowe and her sister, Cindy Johnson. She is survived by her son, James Mattson of Isanti; mother, Diane LaRowe of Cambridge; brother, Scott (Kristi) LaRowe of Isanti; 2 sisters, Virginia (Randy) Westerberg of Cambridge, Elizabeth (Joe) Estepp of Ham Lake; special friend, Mike Babb of Cambridge; former husband, Dean Mattson of Cambridge; and by many other relatives and friends.

I have known Gracie since i moved to Isanti in 6th grade. We have been freinds since. I even lived with her and her family a short time when i was a Senior in High School. We have never lost contact with each other and saw each other a few timies a year. We are only 4 days apart and have spent many birthdays together!! I had tryed to contact her on January 15 to see if she wanted to go out dancing with me. She never called me back. I then got the news of what happened on January 20th. I pray for strength and peace for her family and all her friends. She was truley a wonderful and beautiful friend. I will miss you so much girl. Now its time for our Heavenly Father to take care of you!!

Our dear, sweet, beautiful Gracie is now in the arms of our loving Jesus and all our loving family who have gone on before her. We are still stunned by al this, Gracie. I will miss you and I still miss Gordy and Cindy and all our loved ones whom have welcomed you to our eternal home. I look forward to the day we will all be together again.
I am praying for God’s peace and comfort for all our loving family who are left here on earth to carry on Jesus work. Especially you James. I know your Mom indwelled in you how much she loved you and the love of Jesus and the right way to live life. God bless and keep you strong. May God fill you all with comfort and peace and all you need.

Romans 15:13
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Though we are first cousins, we did not live near each other growing up and I have been in Arizona for 29 years. However, when Cindy became ill, my sister Lori and I flew up to visit Cindy and also visited with Gracie and Diane. I was so moved to see how Gracie cared for Cindy and the love that flowed from her. I was sadden and surprised to see that the LORD also called Gracie home at an early age. Mine is not to question, but when I did ask the LORD why He took Gracie and Cindy home when He did, the answer I felt was “because I love them.” It is hard for us to understand this answer, even though Scripture tells us it is wonderful to be in the presence of the LORD. One day, when we join them, we shall understand. Until then, may God give James, Diane and the family His peace that surpasses all understanding for the tremendous pain of loss you are feeling at this time.
