Thomas Dale Smith (“Smitty”), age 67, of St. Francis died August 31, 2014 at home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, September 5th at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Oak Grove. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral Friday at the church and also from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Thursday, September 4th at Strike Funeral Home – Isanti Chapel. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Reception after at the St. Francis American Legion.
Thomas was born January 13, 1947 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Melvin and Velma (Davis) Smith. He was raised in Prior Lake, Remer and New Brighton and graduated from MoundsView High School in 1965. He retired from the US Postal Service and also from the US Army at the rank of SFC E-7. He was elected as the Commander for a 2nd term and was the Adjutant of 4 years of the American Legion Post 622 in St. Francis. He was also a member and officer of the Sons of the American Legion Post 622. Thomas served as the Chef-de-Gare (Commander) of the Anoka County Voiture 390 of the 40/8 for 3 years and served 4 years on the Anoka County Veterans Service Organization Advisory Board, was a Life Member of the VFW, DAV and Honorary Member of the American Legion. He also founded the TROOP SUPPORT FUND, a non-profit organization.
He is survived by sons, Troy (Pam) of East Bethel, Brian (Angie) of Blaine, Heath (Tanya) of Grand Rapids, Chad (Amanda) of Anoka; brothers, Dick (Anita) of Blaine, Larry (Carol) of Plymouth, and John (Sigrid) of Oak Grove; sister, Judy Walberg (Bruce) of Lino Lakes; grandchildren, Anitra, Stephanie, Tiffany, Stephanie, Tatyana, Leon, Zack, Jaicee, McKenna, Addison, Emma, Nolan, Eva and Miraya; great-grandsons, Kevin and Kyle; former spouse and mother of their 5 wonderful sons, Leone Smith; special niece and nephew, Pam (Wally Loeffler); former spouse, Linda Platt of St. Paul; step-daughter, Jamie Platt of St Paul; many other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, golf family, his Wednesday night golf HAREM (Ladies you know who you are), American Legion, VFW, 40/8, and DAV families.
Thomas D. Smith, “Smitty” passed away August 31, 2014 surrounded by his loving and caring family at the age of 67 years, 7 months and 18 days. Thomas was preceded in death by parents, Melvin and Velma; son, Kevin James; brothers, Jim, Ronny (Lois), Mike; sister, Pat (Ron Greeley) and Butch (Mary); and last but not least, his beloved, devoted, loving, kind Egyptian Mau, Jade, who never left his side, (not even in the shower); she had to check it out first.
