Ruth Bertell, age 90, of Cambridge died unexpectedly on March 2, 2016 at home in GracePointe Crossing – The Commons. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 11th at Strike Funeral Home – Cambridge Chapel with Rev. Earl Lassen officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Negaunee, Michigan.
Ruth Eleanor Bertell was born in Negaunee, Michigan on March 15, 1925 to Alexander and Mary (Peterson) Bertell. Ruth was raised in Negaunee and graduated from High School there, Class of 1943. She attended Bethel College in St. Paul starting in 1948. In 1953 she attended Hamline University and earned a nursing diploma. Ruth then attended the University of Minnesota and in 1956 she received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and in 1963 she earned a degree in Nursing Education. Ruth served as a missionary nurse in Tezpur, Assam, India from 1956 – 1970 with the Baptist General Conference. Ruth spent about six months in Ethiopia after returning from India. She was always active in her churches in Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois and then at First Baptist Church in Cambridge.
Ruth passed away unexpectedly at her home, Grace Pointe Commons, on March 2, 2016 at the age of 90. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Bertell and brothers, Bernhard Bertell and Stanley Soderstrom. Ruth is survived by her sister, Nancy (Jack) Watney; nephews, Ben (Cathy) Bertell and James (Carolyn) Watney; niece, Beth (Tae Yon) Kim; grandniece, Tesa Bertell; grandnephews, Alex Bertell, Joshua and Aaron Kim; and by many friends.
