Monte P. Smith, age 64 of Cambridge, died unexpectedly on January 18, 2022 at Cambridge Medical Center. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring.
Monte Palmer Smith 07/12/1957-01/18/2022
Monte had a wandering spirit, and a great love for the outdoors. He picked up cool rocks, and sticks that he carved into walking sticks and swords. He had an eye for taking pictures as he traveled the trails in Arizona, the shores of Oregon, the beauty of Glacier National Park and everywhere in between. Monte loved his family, he enjoyed time with his brother and sister in-law, going on trips with his sons and spending days with his daughter and his new grand baby. He was loved by everyone who got to meet him, he had friends around the country and was always up for a good debate. His quick wit and dry sense of humor could light up a room. The world is a little darker and a lot colder without him.
He is survived by brother Bruce (Karen), Brother Donny, and sister Debbie (Mark), ex wife Debra, his children, son Matt, daughter Marni (Anna), son Jarome (Mandi) and grandchildren Ash and Morgan.
He was preceded in death by his mother Joann and his father Don.
Monte always loved to travel with his dad, Don and we know they are together now on the greatest adventure.

Monte, I know how much you loved your family. The way you lit up when you were with Morgan was a joy to behold. I know you will be watching over her and we will make sure she knows how much you loved her. Travel well! It was an honor to know you!

Monte was my classmate at CHS. He was always quiet and shy, but when you could visit one on one, he was so cool, wise beyond his years, and truly an old soul.
He “disappeared” from our contact info list for years, and I was so incredibly excited to see him at one of our class reunions about six years ago! We visited much. He was always a beautiful person.
By reading this tribute to him, I realize that he was truly a kindred spirit. Although our paths didn’t cross often, I will treasure times when they did, and will miss his presence here forever.
May your next great adventure be more than you could have ever hoped for, Monte. Peace my friend.
My deepest condolences to those who loved him.

I just wish the words would come to me to say goodbye, but a part of me doesn’t want them to. I feel like no epitaph could do him justice. Brother-in-law, friend, dad and grandfather to my nieces and nephews, he was that and so much more. Life is both illuminated by his being part of it and darkened by his absence. Godspeed Dudemus Borealis. The world will never see your like again.

Monte, you were the closest thing I had to a second father growing up. Despite all our antics, you were kind, patient, and caring. This world is losing a lot by losing you.
Marni, I will always be there for you, sis. I’m so sorry for your loss. I know you will be tempted to be there for everyone else, but remember to take care of yourself. I love you.
