Thursday, May 19th at New Hope Community Church – ISANTI Campus, 114 Dahlin Ave NE, Isanti. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Edward P. Leopold was born in St. Paul, MN on March 26, 1944 to Henry and Agnes (Lazwskay) Leopold. The family resided in the Eastside of St. Paul as did several extended family members who helped provide when times were tight. Ed was especially close with his mom, whom he adored, and had one sibling, an older sister, Joan.
As a young child, Ed attended private school and was known to get into a little mischief. Growing up, Ed always looked for ways to have fun; from riding his bicycles, playing ball, roller skating, ice skating, playing hockey on the rink next-door, or just “hanging out” with his buddies at the playgrounds. As a teen and young man, he attended Johnson High School in St. Paul, and continued to have fun; especially with cars, motorcycles, dancing (even on TV); wearing meticulously ironed and trend-setting clothes was a must.
At the age of 21, Ed joined the United States Army and proudly served his country, including tours of duty in Vietnam. He became a welder by trade, a trade that served him well for many years, before making a career change to grounds crew. At age 38, Ed realized he needed help for an alcohol addiction and with a friend’s help, sought treatment. 40 years later, Ed remained alcohol and drug free!
After becoming sober, Ella finally agreed to date him and they were later married in 1983. Ed became a proud dad of three boys, Bob, Steve, and Mike. He was a very busy and active dad; helping to coach beginner sports and cheering the boys on at endless youth baseball, football, and hockey games; family camping adventures; fishing; and not to mention fixing cars-trucks-vans to keep ‘em going. After becoming empty nesters, Ed and his honey, Ella, held hands and rode off into the sunset on either snowmobiles or motorcycles! A special time for sure, but eventually becoming a grandpa (8 times) was the blessing he treasured most. It didn’t matter what he and the grandkids did together, from watching TV, rides on the lawnmower and golf cart, fishing, fixing stuff, warm weather vacations, sporting events, puzzles, playing checkers, chatting…he enjoyed it all.
A loving and devoted husband, dad, dad in-law, grandpa, son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend…
