Dave A. Dahlquist was born December 20, 1945, in Braham, raised on the family farm outside of Grasston, Minnesota. He went to country school at Grasston Elementary and graduated from Braham High School. He attended the U of M and received a master’s degree in agriculture education. Dave taught Ag at Braham High School and Pine Technical & Community College.
In November of 1967, he was united in marriage to Ellie Dahlquist (Selberg), and they made their first home in Bagley, Minnesota. In 1971 they moved to Braham, raised their children, and remained there until moving to GracePointe Crossing in Cambridge.
Dave genuinely loved his community and was very involved in many aspects including being a firefighter, on the church council and Braham School Board. After several years of teaching, Dave began working as an agent for Thrivent Financial Services. His final career stop was Grand Casino Hinckley where he absolutely loved working the floor on the night shift in slots.
Dave enjoyed many years with Ellie at their cabin on Lake Sullivan, filled with lots of fishing and woodworking. In true Dave fashion, he also became an important member of the community of Hillman, Minnesota. When not working at the casino or cabin, Dave traveled often with Ellie. They visited many different cities and states domestically, but the best trip of all was when the whole family went to Sweden and Norway to see their foreign exchange children, Ann-Sofie (1988-1989) and Henrik (1990-1991). Most important to Dave was his faith, friends, and family, of which came his only grandchild, Josephine. He loved nothing more than to see her perform in dance even if the music was too loud.
David passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Prairie Senior Cottages in Isanti following a decade long battle with Alzheimer’s. He is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar, and Gertrude Dahlquist; siblings, Majorie Parson, Jane Dahlquist, Richard Dahlquist; son-in-law, Jonathan Mortrud.
Dave is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ellie; sister, Linda Dahlquist; sister-in-law, RuthAnn Noren; children, Carrie Mortrud (Joe Hemberger), Sara Dahlquist, Aaron Dahlquist; granddaughter, Josephine Mortrud; nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

I am honored to have met and interacted with Dave and his wonderful family before his decline. He was a great, kind, clever, fun, unique man. He has passed these traits down to his children as well. They, and of course, Ellie, have been so good for him these past several years, they should be so proud.

Our sympathy and love is with Ellie and all Dave’s family. We were privileged to know Dave as a friend and also a leader of many Thrivent (AAL) sessions in their home in Braham. He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed.

Dear Ellie & family
We couldn’t ask for better neighbors (for my parents) in Braham. When the Dahlquist family moved in next door in the early 1970’s, Jim and Dave became instant friends! He was always there to lend a hand and help with tree cutting , raking leaves, etc. Dave was one of the good guys and will be missed. Sending love and hugs,
Sharon and Dennis
