Evangeline Black, age 67 of Cambridge died July 29, 2024 at Rosewood Senior Living in Cambridge. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 22nd at Christ the King Catholic Church in Cambridge.
Evangeline “Vangie” B. Elnar Black of Cambridge, MN transitioned to her next life peacefully and beautifully with her older sister Genmary Elnar Wentworth at her side on Monday, July 29, 2024. She breathed her last and bowed her head as we both prayed the second Joyful Mystery of the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was the third child of nine. As an older sister of two brothers and four sisters, she was the source of financial assistance and other material needs of the younger ones who were in college studies in the different universities and colleges in Cebu City, Philippines. She goes out of her way to provide and help a family member in need. She was the beacon of support, warmth and comfort to the family, friends and everyone who knew her. She will deeply be missed.
Evangeline was born on September 19, 1956 to Emiliano Barce Elnar, Sr. and Melitona S. Burdago-Elnar in Guihulngan, Negros Oriental, Philippines. She is the third child of nine siblings. She had two elder sisters, two younger brothers and four younger sisters. She graduated elementary education with honors from the Guihulngan Central School. She finished the four year high school curriculum at Guihulngan Vocational High School with honors. She graduated Bachelor of Science in Commerce, major in Economics at Foundation University in Dumaguete City, Philippines. She graduated with honors despite difficulties and hard work to be able to afford college education on her own. She followed older sisters, Genmary and Elizabeth to Cebu City after graduation to search for job opportunities. In no time, she got employed fast and easy at San Santos Lumber Company (a manufacturer and exporter of furniture and house appliances). She worked with this company until 1980.
In 1996, she met Larry Black when he visited Cebu City and on April 26th they were united in marriage. Months later when all papers and documents were completed for her to be able to travel to the USA with Larry. She joined him to come to Cambridge and made their home there. For a number of years, she worked at the Bindery in Cambridge until the need for her to be the sole caregiver to her husband came. She may not have had children of her own, but she had seven nephews and six nieces in the Philippines whom she adored and supported.
She loved music, especially hymns and folk songs which she sang during her relaxing moments and even while doing household chores. She used to be a member of a choral group during her younger years. She also did some embroidery, sewing and cooking.
Evangeline is survived by her husband, Larry; sisters, Genmary E Wentworth, Elizabeth & Buenaventura Jakosalem, Jr., Lani Elnar, Edna & Allan Wicker, Rev. Emily Elnar-Vanguardia, Emelda & Marcelino Español; brothers, Emiliano Jr., Emmanuel & Ma Georgette Elnar. She was loved by nephews, Francis John Mari & Claire Elnar, Francis Norbert Mill & Sophie Elnar, Mark Chester & Dianne Elnar, Lyle John Jakosalem, Francis Karl Jakosalem, Genesis Gabriel & Johanna Elnar, Mill Alfred Español. She is equally loved by nieces, Dr. Keren Keziah Vanguardia, Tevet Margaret Vanguardia, Danielle Veronica Vanguardia, Beth Marionne Jakosalem, Rhea Kristine Elnar, Katrin Angeli Español. She will be missed by grandnephews, Francis Jyohan Christoff Elnar and Carlysle Elnar, who had been wishing to see her. She was loved by her huge family circle and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emiliano Sr. and Melitona Elnar.
