Jason Joseph Person, 73, of Cambridge died at his home on March 9, 2025, due to complications from advanced cardiovascular disease. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 5th at Strike Life Tributes in Cambridge with visitation one hour prior.
Jason was born on December 17, 1951, in Rapid City, SD, to Herman Joseph Person and Marilyn “Molly” (Heckathorne) Person. The family moved to Kranzburg, SD, and then to Bowdle SD, in 1958. Jason excelled at every sport he tried. He lettered in football, basketball, and track, and was all-conference in football and basketball. He was especially proud of winning the Best Trainer award for Bowdle High School. In 1969, Jason made All Conference as an offensive left halfback and as a defensive back and made the All State Football Team.
On June 8, 1974, in Mobridge, SD, Jason married Mary Ann Schlomer, and they started their family in Bowdle. Jason worked with his father in construction while he was still in high school and continued working for Person and Sons Construction until 1984 when he and his family moved to Cambridge, MN, when Mary took a new teaching job. He continued to work in construction until his heart surgery forced him to retire in 2008. Because of his eye for detail, he excelled at finish carpentry.
Jason enjoyed his honeymoon in Hawaii, extended family trips to Cancun and Colorado, a fishing trip in Canada with his buddy Gary Schulz, a family trip to Branson, MO, and annual family summer cabin vacations. His favorite pastimes were cribbage, horseshoes, pool, golf, driveway basketball, kubb, and watching many sports.
Jason is survived by his wife Mary and their four children Jessica (James) Freitag, St. Anthony, MN, Heather Person, Cambridge, MN, Samson (Aracely) Person, Mounds View, MN, and Chelsey Peterson, Cambridge, MN, and by six grandchildren Timothy (Haley) Person, Gavin Person, Dwayne Peterson, Juno Freitag, Tiana Peterson, and Amar’e Peterson, and a great-grandchild Luci Person. He is also survived by his sisters Susan (Richard) Mitzel, Bowdle, SD, and Francine (Max) Buechler, Bowdle, SD, and by his brother Rusty (Sherre) Person, Aberdeen, SD, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and special friends, Tim Dewald and Doug Howard. Jason was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Alan and David, and his sister Jane.
So sorry to see this… Jason was a helpful neighbor to my parents when they lived in the Willow Wood neighborhood. My condolences to Mary and the extended family.
Our condolences Mary and family. So sorry to hear of your husband’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family during this very difficult time.
