Janice May Hitchings was born October 31, 1939 in Backus, Minnesota to Harlan and Louise (Burow) Sherman. Janice’s dad worked for the railroad and they moved often. She attended high school until the 11th grade in Duluth and then graduated from Bemidji High School in 1956. On May 14, 1960 Jan married William “Bill” Hitchings and they made their home in Minneapolis and Fridley before moving to rural Isanti in 1972.
Jan worked at Honeywell for a few years before having children, after which Jan enjoyed being a mom, raising her children, and spending time with her grandchildren on the farm in Isanti. Jan and Bill did a lot of traveling in retirement, including with their close friends Betty and Chuck. They also had many special times at the cabin in Barnum with friends and family.
Jan passed away September 28, 2025 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 28 days. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; brother, Richard Sherman; and brother-in-law, Herman Challstrom.
She will be lovingly remembered by her four children, Tim (Karn) Hitchings; Terri Hitchings (Tom Hauge), Tad Hitchings (Christina Clark) and Traci (Brent) Doege; five grandchildren, Tristin, Elise, Emily, MaKayla and Spencer; great-grandchild, Allee; sister, Wilma Challstrom; and sister-in-law, Kim Sherman.
Jan was a great person and watched our children from her at home daycare. The kids liked her so much especially my daughter that there were times she didn’t want to leave because they were having so much fun!! Great person!!
Tim, Karn, Elise and Emily –
So sorry to learn about the loss of your Mom and Grandma! The boys and I still remember the fun we had on the farm in the gopher car! May lots of great memories give you peace during this time.
Love,
Suzanne, Ron and boys
My sister Kelsey and I were very blessed to be apart of Jan’s home for daycare for a long time, she was a wonderful person, always kind and caring who treated us like family, she will always have a special place in our hearts. God Bless her and Bill, in heaven together.

Tim, Terri, Tad and Tracy,
My deepest sympathy, i have so many great memories of your folks and you kids.
We were always welcomed when we would just drop in.
The children were all about the same age.
