Abby Marie Malecha, age 31, of Cambridge, MN, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, October 25, 2025, following a year-long, courageous battle with cancer.
Born on May 26, 1994, in Maplewood, MN, Abby was the daughter of the late Kim Hugger and Patrick McCarty. She graduated from Rush City High School in 2012 before continuing her pursuit of education. She earned an Associate’s Degree from Anoka Ramsey Community College in 2019 and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Concordia University in 2021, a testament to her dedication to learning and helping others.
Abby dedicated her professional life to serving her community as a Social Worker for the Behavioral Health Unit of Isanti County. She deeply loved her work, finding joy in helping her clients and cherishing the time spent with her coworkers. Abby was a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and absolutely loved being able to help those in the community less fortunate than her.
Known as a gentle, kind, selfless, and loving soul, Abby consistently tried to bring the best out in everyone she encountered. She was deeply passionate about reading, horses, traveling, cooking, and furthering her education. Some of her favorite activities included horseback riding, visiting amusement parks, and going to zoos and aquariums, but most of all, she loved spending time with her beloved family and friends.
Abby is survived by her devoted husband, Joshua Malecha, and her loving children, Saylor and step daughter Caylee.
She is also survived by her siblings: Stacy Johnson; Tami & Ben Meier (Olivia, Ayla, Sierra, Duke); Mike & Amanda Bruggeman (Lucy, Wilson, Calvin); Kelly McCarty; Robert and Sam McCarty (Makai, Jaylen, Lilly, Eden, Archer); Kyle McCarty; and brother-in-law Nick & Natasha Malecha (Samuel, Elijah, Colton).
I will miss Abby dearly. The last few days I’ve been dealing with how I wasn’t the best sister to her and avoided her battle due to my own pain and scars. I am going through every photo I have of her and smiling/crying. I will always remember her as my sweet little sister that was the ONLY reason why I liked to go to our dad’s house on weekends. Praying for Stacy and as they have been there for her through everything. Above all I am praying for Saylor. Heaven has gained the sweetest girl. Love you Abby girl.
Going to miss you Abby! I feel blessed to have known you!!

You were always a bright light, even in high school, always willing to lend an ear and offer support. Praying for your family, your husband, and your sweet little girl in this time. Rest in roses, dear ❤️

Oh Abby… my heart hurts.
I’ve known Abby since elementary school, and growing up I was like a sister to her and Stacy. We spent countless weekends together…having sleepovers, playing games, watching movies, going to fairs and waterparks, and simply laughing through life. Those memories are some of my most treasured from childhood.
As the years went on and distance naturally grew, I was so grateful for the moments we reconnected A fun family camping trip with our sweet baby girls, and other celebrations life brought our way. Abby brought so much joy, kindness, and light into my life.
I will miss her beautiful soul deeply. My heart and prayers are with her sweet Saylor, her husband Josh, and the entire family, as well as everyone who had the blessing of knowing her. Abby was strong, caring, brave, and full of light.
I am grateful I had the privilege to grow up with her and call her my friend.
The battle is over now.
Only perfect peace for you, sweet angel. 🤍
Abby was the fiercest advocate for those she served. I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to know her and work alongside her. She was unapologetically her quirky self. I’ll never forget that or her. ❤️ Fly high Abby and send us signs you’re watching. ❤️
