James E. “Bud” Luther, age 92 of Cambridge, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday evening, at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 15, at Strike Life Tributes in Cambridge. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Minneiska. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to the American Cancer Society.
Bud was born on September 4, 1933, to parents Edwin and Helen Luther in Brewster. He was the third of seven children, preceded in death by sisters Carol, Lois and Mary. John, Alan and Alice are his surviving siblings.
On October 20, 1956, Bud married Doreen Sheehan at St. Mary’s Church in Minneiska. Left to honor his life and mourn his death are his wife Doreen and their four children: Denise, Jodell, Jamie and Kurt. He will be dearly missed by 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Camping, fishing and gardening were Bud’s life-long pleasures. For many years his family owned a beautiful log cabin, built in 1919, along the Wahkon Bay of Lake Mille Lacs. He loved to read science-fiction books and watch movies about the Wild West. As an Army veteran he also enjoyed playing WWII videos on his computer.
Bud’s final employment was as a machinist at Remmele Engineering, a job that called him on trips all over the world, including Puerto Rico, Mexico City and Saudi Arabia. After 28 years, he retired and began traveling with his spouse on People’s First Bank tour group. His favorite event was a European River Cruise.
It’s been a great honor to know Bud, his life skills, his garden skills and his fantastic woodwork which is just incredible.

Listening to his stories from being on the farm to his skills of being in manufacturing was fun to hear.

Bud and Doreen and their kids (and cat, Bootsie) were our first friends when we moved into the house across the dead end. They proved to be wonderful friends to my parents and my siblings and myself. I remember the garden – it was amazing. And when they put on that big room addition. And Bud helping my dad with snowblowing when we’d get those huge amounts of snow. We camped with them a few times. I remember one time when Doreen took my mom and all of us kids (six of us) in a little VW Bug – maybe swimming? Wonderful memories of wonderful neighbors.
I know what a loss Bud will be for your whole family. You have my sincere condolences.

When I think back on almost seventy years that my Uncle Bud has been a part of my life, lots of wonderful memories come to mind. The years of family gatherings at my Grandma’s farm laughing, playing cards, and hearing all the wild stories shared around the table are so memorable. Seeing the beautiful gardens Aunt Doreen and Uncle Bud grew were worthy of a picture in a Home & Garden magazine. They were so beautiful! The times I was able to visit Uncle Bud in Minnesota he was always so welcoming, loved to talk to you, and wanted you to eat something from his garden. I feel so blessed to have shared Uncle Bud with my husband and sons. He will truly be missed. Love you, Uncle Bud.
